The Black Tent

Postby Bob_H » Wed Jun 05, 2013 7:21 am

We've received this from Paul Cook. Please post any information you have about this, especially if you have photos. Regimental half tracks and tanks were used during the making of this film in Libya:

"Hello,

I am trying to hunt down any photographs of the 14/20th Kings Hussars during the time of the filming of “The Black Tent”. My father was a REME Lcpl at the time attached to work on the Centurion Mk111’s and he has lost all of his photographs of his time there.

My Fathers name is Graham Cook.

I would be really grateful for any help at all.

All my best,

Paul

Bob,
The Black Tent was filmed while I was there so some of my photos would apply.

Hello,
Thank you for the reply. I only mention "The Black Tent" for a date/time reference, as he said he was there and serving at the time.
I did see a lot of photographs when I was much younger, in a rough card Kodak box, remember trying to pick him out in the regiment picture in front of the tanks. Unfortunately these were lost in a house move many years ago.
Ironically he said he sometimes took the official pictures.

As my father Graham Cook turned 80 last year and its fathers day coming up it would be fantastic to give him a little reminder.
I know he remembers his number (like I'm sure you all do) but I don't want to spoil a potential surprise.
If you would be willing to copy any pictures either as prints or on cd ..I'd happily cover your costs.

Thank you

Paul

Hello Bulldog,
Thank you for that fantastic information....so not a Lcpl then. Had to admit I've looked a AQMS up today....sorry.

Things will slot slowly into place.....he has said he did 18 months intensive training, which I thought was strange, trailed for officer rank and went for sharp shot (his mis- spent youth was spent in the country aiming at the village church weather vain)

Is there any way of getting a regiment picture from circa 1951 anywhere?

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,

Paul

Ahhhh,
So seems his name sake was a higher rank ...at that time.

My fathers name is Graham Theo Cook

1954 would have been closer to the time of the filming of the "Tent" so would perhaps make more sense? Maybe made it up the rank later?

Is there any chance of getting B squadron photograph?

Thanks again for all your help.

Paul

Paul I think Bodge is correct I have also found a picture on page 182 1955 Hawk.

There is a Cook in the photo and some of the other lads were from the A Sqn Reme detachment

Good find David. We could also ask if the one in the centre is Bodge?

Here's another - 'B' Sqn LAD in Tripoli.

Bulldog is there any way of seeing a larger view of your picture??

Thank you all very much

Hi Bob,
The first photo is of some of A Squadrons REME.
No I am not the one in the other photo.
If I am right about G T Cook he may remember fellow member Brian Prattly also REME B Squadron at the same time.
Brian was keen on motor cyclling and was in the regiments team.

Paul, Great reply here from Trevor Stubberfield:

Greetings Bob,

I edit the web site ‘Arborfield & The September 49ers’ which is an independent site based on life at the Arborfield Army Apprentices School and beyond.

Monitoring the site I noticed an influx of visitors from your Forum, accessing the Roll call Project 1946-50. They came from the topic ‘The Black Tent’, posted by Paul Cook regarding photos of his father Graham. I don’t think we have his father’s name on site but, as yet, the roll is incomplete. He would only be included if he actually served an apprenticeship at Arborfield.

The ‘Black Tent’ starring Anthony Steel was just one of many films shot in Libya in the 1950s, probably the best known was ‘Ice Cold In Alex.

Although I can’t help Paul directly with the information he is looking for, I do have a large section of photos and information about Tripoli and the surrounding area, 1956-59. I wonder if the scenic section would bring back memories of Libya and Tripoli to his father, and indeed, show Paul the area that his father served in?

The memoir opens from the abbreviated link below….

Best regards from

Trevor Stubberfield (Trevor 52A)
Current Editor of the ‘Arborfield & The September 49ers’ web site.
