On 3 Sept 1962 the advance party went to Benghazi. I was looking after Barney Nadin's son at the airport. The last time I heard he was a Lt Com flying jets.in the navy. Just like yesterday.good old day's

My memory of the occasion was of a bus ride from Tidworth then a long, long delay in Heathrow and an awful lot of beer. The plane if I remember it right was a Bristol Britannia. The seats were facing backwards which was the airlines preferred way of positoning them at that time, not that I remember much about the flight. Fell asleep immediately on takeoff it may have been before. Apparently over France we went through the worst turbulence ever experienced by the flight crew. They woke everybody, that they could (I was not one of them) to have us alert in case of a crash. I woke up just in time to land at Benina.
If I remember correctly in that first couple of days we became familiar term 'self-inflicted injuries'. Long exposure to the Libyan sun. Quite a few were charged.
Another Old Hawk might remember who we took over from. My fading memory believes it was 2 RTR but I am probably wrong. Whoever it was why were they in such a hurry to get out of the place.
OH Happy days.

Arnie,
You are dead right it was 2RTR I play golf with an old boy soldier I served with Charlie Welchman who like me spent time at Lulworth and we took over from them in Wavell and Tripoli just prior to the Barche earthqwakes. As you can imagine at the 19th hole we pull up a sand bag and "Swing the Lead"

Mick,
as usual I will lower the tone. When I pull up a sandbag nowadays I have to put an inflated rubber ring on top, and there ain't too much lead to swing. :( :( :D :( :(
